Try This!
So with all of the talk about new music I am curious what is in your CD/.mp3 player at the moment? What album would you recommend that I should pick up? Right now I am listening to Kings of Leon's "Only By the Night". Personally, from beginning to end I think it is a four star record. I have their other stuff but I didn't like it all that much. The singer has a really unique voice and I don't think he got a handle on it until this album. They are a Tennessee band so perhaps some of you have already heard of them.

I pretty much just listen to classical these days but I did come across this guy named Tommy Emmanuel that has an interesting playing style. I can't seem to get my brain to let my fingers pick the B and e strings while my thumb plays the day tripper riff. At 1:52 of the video, he even has the audacity to tune a string! He (like Michael Kelsey) probably was dropped on his head as a child or something...
i've been listening this guy 24/7
www.angelo.com
i figure listening to him will make me a more obnoxious guitar player!
otherwise, as i've mentioned, I haven't listened to anything for over a year and just started back again by dragging out some of my fave artists and dissecting them anew with hopefully a slightly different take
One time one of the guys from Kings Of Leon came up and asked a friend of mine if she had an 8-ball. She was like, "come on, idiot." And he was like, "It's just an 8-ball..."
But it turns out an 8-ball isn't just an 8-ball. It's SOME DRUGS!
I Have been listening to "Jets to Brazil"Perfecting Loneliness and "Minus the bear" Planet of Ice.
an 8-ball, LOL. man that just adds a bit more weight to my (other) theory that "the less you know about most artists, the more music you will be able to enjoy".
Is it just me or is Planet of Ice and exceptionally good album? (but please don't tell me anything about the band =)
Haha... Yeah, it's got Yes/King Crimson/"good prog" stuff going on. Haven't listened in a while, kinda wore it out, but that's not a bad thing.
Nathan, great call on the JTB.
You guys ever hear the Jawbreaker record "Dear You?" It was the guy from Jets To Brazil's old band, and that was their only great record... But it is very great. I have 100% faith that anyone here would enjoy it. Check out the deluxe edition; even the outtakes are good.
8-ball...yikes. Didn't need to know that trivia fact. :-)
I'll have to check out this Minus the Bear. I am not usually down with prog rock but I am down for anything. They have three of their songs on myspace off that album. The drummer is pretty good though! (a staple for a prog rock band)
yeah, and make sure you check out some of the videos on www.angelo.com cause he's my favorite person EVER! ;-)
Hello, my name is Hap. A few months ago I would have told you that I categorically abhor the Beach Boys. In my player right now, however, is a crazy Beach Boys bootleg--SMiLE.
Check it!
funny how sometimes we assume we hate a band because we've heard the over-played hits every day of our life...
i've never liked the Stones except for Paint it Black until I was over at a friends house who had a bunch of EARLY Stones on 45's and i hadn't realized that early on they actually had some talent. now i'm not running out and buying all their old stuff, but at least i know there might be some reason that they are so loved by so many.
funny note: my uncle played a Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" tape nonstop from here to Colorado and back when I was 14... good times.
My dad played Jimmy Buffett from Nashville to North Carolina (the coast)..(at least everytime I was awake that was playing when it was his turn to drive)...that was better than his country music though! So everytime I hear Margaritaville, I dream of a brown/tan conversion van with shag carpet and the floor I was sleeping on getting increasingly HOT as we drove on! Was that safe?
I personally have gotten into Kings of Leon as well..they are one of my "stations" on my Pandora site. I do enjoy them.
Yay another Kings of Leon fan! Good stuff.
BTW Sean for a second I thought you were serious about Angelo.
That second went like this:
"Oh no. Nnnnoooooooo. No? No! Ok no."
Whoa now Amy.
I think growing up in Nashville may have robbed you of some perspective.
I'd take Johnny Cash or Willie Nelson or Hank Williams... even some not-so-classic old country... over Jimmy Buffett any day.
Fun fact: My ex-gf Willa's biological father produced Margaritaville.
I've been listening to the new Umphrey's McGee album "Mantis" a lot since it came out. Good stuff. Combines some good progressive rock with nice melodic song writing.
